Welcome!

Getting the Gig is a bi-weekly newsletter from the We Want Music! Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting, advocating for, and celebrating music creation, performance, and education—while strengthening the real-world music economy.

This newsletter is built for students like you who are curious about life beyond the practice room. Whether you’re thinking about studio work, touring, teaching, freelancing, or becoming the artist people buy tickets to see, Getting the Gig helps you explore what’s possible—and what it really takes to get there.

We focus on two main ideas:

  1. The many paths of a music career. From session gigs to live shows, side-person work to headlining your own projects, we break down the options and what they look like in the real world.

  2. Learning from musicians who are doing the work. There’s no single “right” way to succeed. Through interviews and stories from working performers, you’ll hear firsthand how different artists built careers on their own terms.

We also want this to be a conversation. Subscribers can share feedback, vote in polls, and help shape future topics so the content stays relevant to you.

Thanks for being here. With your input, Getting the Gig will help you ask smarter questions, see bigger possibilities, and take your next steps as a musician with confidence.
